Autopsy on Unclaimed Bodies-Practical Issues

Expert Talk

An autopsy is a surgical process that involves dissecting a corpse to identify the cause, mode, and manner of death, or in certain circumstances, to assess any sickness or damage that may be present for research or educational purposes. Around 13 million people are homeless in India, according to estimates. As these individuals don’t have close acquaintances, in the event of death, their body remains unclaimed.

Unclaimed bodies bring with them a plethora of problems, most of it relating to identification. If the cause of death is not natural, then police investigations become difficult with unidentified bodies since there is practically no information to begin with. Police officials have to rely on tattoos of religious symbols or the names of spouses or some kind of birthmark that they can use to match the description of a person from a “missing persons” report. If there is nothing in the database, the police have to get an advertisement printed on the Newspaper and hope that someone identifies the victim. On the off chance that they find some sort of document or ID on the victim, the investigation does get easier. In this Expert Talk Sir talked about Practical Issues related to Autopsy on Unclaimed Bodies and various other issues.

It was a very informative talk based on external examination only. Prof Rastogi has consciously avoided medical details in line with ethical requirements of Professional Misconduct of associate with unrelated non-medical personnels regarding medical knowledge. I agree entirely with him on Cost factors of DNA profiling of all unidentified dead bodies. In mass disasters, autopsies on all victims need to be avoided. It must be there in clear cut guidelines, it's my humble suggestion.
