Forensic toxicology is the application of toxicology to the field of law. The discipline continues to flourish as a result of human fascination with poisons, their effects on living organisms, detection in human remains, and role of toxicology in judicial proceedings. Postmortem toxicology, forensic drug testing, and human performance toxicology are the three major subdivisions of the discipline at the present time. Forensic toxicology investigations begin with the fundamental and critical requirement of acquisition of an appropriate specimen. Beyond this, a suitable scientific technique must be applied to analyze the specimen. The forensic toxicologists must be familiar with a wide range of chemical substances and utilize knowledge from other basic science disciplines and cooperation of other professionals to answer questions related to deaths, sicknesses, or any areas where a poison or drug is suspected. Forensic toxicologists are often called upon to testify in court in matters related to their own scientific investigations, or results obtained by other scientists.

The term "questioned document" refers to any handwriting, typewriting, signature, or mark whose authenticity is in dispute. The types of documents that come under the examiner's purview include wills, contracts, letters, threatening letters, suicide notes, ransom notes, photos, lottery tickets, passports, voter registrations, drivers licenses, checks, tax returns, sales receipts, torn pieces of paper (such as matches torn from a matchbook), photocopies, carbon paper, charred paper, faxes, and the like. Although typically such documents are paper, examiners can be called on to examine any surface on which marks or writing appears, including, for example, walls, blackboards, or rubber stamps.

Toxicology is traditionally defined as "the science of poisons." Forensic Physics is one of the hardest fields of forensic science. Forensic science plays an ever-increasing and critical role in the justice system. Disaster Victim Identification or DVI is the method used to identify victims of mass casualty incidents such as aircraft crashes or the bomb blasts in Bali. The process can be long and involved due the nature of the event and the need to correctly identify the victim.

The risk of mis-identification of an individual can bring into question all identifications and heighten the trauma of what is an already stressful situation.Mass disasters can be natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or bush fires, or man‐made incidents like transportation (airline, train) accidents, terrorist attacks and war. In the forensic community, serology and DNA analyses are closely related. In fact, in many laboratories they are included within the same unit, collectively titled Forensic Biology. Experts in forensic voice analyze recordings by examining transmitted and stored speech, enhancing it and decoding it for criminal investigations, court trials, and federal agencies. To utilize audio recordings in court, a forensic phonetician must authenticate the recording to detect tampering, enhance the audio, and interpret the speech. Their first job is to ensure that the speech in the recording being used is comprehensible. Oftentimes, samples have poor sound quality due to environmental factors such as wind or movement. Other times the sound degradation is due to technological issues within the recording device. Any investigative work on speaker identification cannot be done until the recording is of proper quality. Different solutions for poor comprehensibility are done using computer programs that allow the user to filter and eliminate noise. Computer software is also able to convert the speech to spectra and waveforms, which is useful for the forensic phonetician. However, any work done on the recording should be done after a copy of the original recording is made.

Diatoms are identifiable based on each species unique silica cell walls and vary depending on their environment. Because they have determinant properties diatoms create flora profiles for scientists. When these microscopic algae die, their frustules (silica cell walls) becomes a part of the water sediment. The presence of the frustules enables scientists to compare the cell walls of the deceased organisms with the living diatoms to determine characteristics of their environment. In early spring and the fall the ratio of living diatoms to dead diatoms is high, whereas, in summer and winter the amount of dead diatoms outpopulates the living. Based on this known information diatoms can verify the time of year samples were taken. Different types of diatoms can also determine the properties of a samples ecosystem. For example, the higher ratio of periphytic (type of platonic diatom), the higher the vegetation concentration and shallower the water, but the higher the ratio of scaled chrysophytes a sample means the environment of that organism contains more open water. Forensic scientists can create differentiated markers on environments in the area they are collecting data based on the diatoms population growth rate, which is affected by pollutants in their water sources because the simple tissues of diatoms make them sensitive environmental changes. The reason diatoms are a common tool to match water environments is because of the variability of their populations are predictable and constant, the organisms can be identified by using the light microscope, and their silica cell walls allow for preservation.

Physical or biological anthropology deals with the evolution of humans, their variability, and adaptations to environmental stresses. Fire investigators conduct their investigations using a systematic approach utilizing the scientific method, including the following: When arsonists attack, there is very rarely much evidence left at the scene. However, arsonists usually use accelerants to speed up a blaze. Forensic scientists use technologies to heat samples taken from the scene causing any residue to separate. This sample is then analyzed to determine the chemical structure. Scientists also use other tests such as using liquid nitrogen gas to trap residue which are then analyzed using gas chromatography.

Computer forensics (also known as computer forensic science) is a branch of digital forensic science pertaining to evidence found in computers and digital storage media. Forensic Psychology, a subfield of psychology, involves the application of psychological knowledge and methods to both civil and criminal legal questions. Traditionally, it has a broad definition as well as a narrow definition. DNA profiling is the determination of a DNA profile for legal and investigative purposes. DNA analysis methods have changed numerous times over the years as technology improves and allows for more information to be determined with less starting material. Antemortem injuries are those injuries a body has received before death. They may be a contributing factor in the death or even its cause. On the other hand, they may have occurred many years ago. During an autopsy , the pathologist assesses the age of antemortem injuries, as well as distinguishing them from postmortem injuries—that is, injuries occurring after death. Forensic firearm examination is the forensic process of examining the characteristics of firearms or bullets left behind at a crime scene. Specialists in this field are tasked with linking bullets to weapons and weapons to individuals. Drowning is difficult to prove beyond the accidental death stage simply because of the nature in which it happens.
